They developed a reputation for making innovative reels when, in 1965, they reinvented the spinning fishing reel by putting the spool on the outside of the rotor. Today, Daiwa's style of "out-spool" reels make up almost all spinning reels, and the "in-spool" reels of the past are rarely produced today. Just 15 years later, they shocked the world again by developing the world's first carbon graphite reels.
